Maldon RFC

10 - 47

(HT 0-0)

Campion RFC

Maldon welcomed Campion to Drapers Farm, a team who have a good record against Maldon in recent years. Following last week’s big win Maldon were hopeful of another positive performance.

With a VPs crowd watching, the 3s playing on the adjacent pitch & perfect conditions for rugby, the scene was set for a good afternoon.

Campion, however, did not realise that Maldon had planned a winning performance. Campion started at 100 miles per hour, throwing the ball around, supporting each other, playing at great pace, getting over/through tackles & dominating in every department. Without too much difficulty Campion crossed for the opening try after 3 minutes, with Maldon only briefly touching the ball, 0-7. Despite being shell-shocked by this rapid start by Campion, Maldon came back trying their best to compete with the opposition. But, Campion were on fire. Everything went Campion’s way, but it wasn’t luck, just very good rugby. Maldon hardly saw the ball & when they did Campion defended resolutely, turning the ball over or stopping Maldon from getting over the gainline.

The rest of the first half was a continuation of the start, with Campion creating opportunities & Maldon struggling to impose themselves on the game. Due to more Maldon errors, or excellent attacking play, Campion scored 3 more converted tries for a half-time score of 0-28, with Campion securing the bonus point already.

Maldon were determined to get back into the game in the second half, but Campion had other ideas. Maldon managed to get some territory, being inside the Campion 22m line for a sustained period of time. But, Campion turned the ball over, moved it wide & ran in a great try. Despite lots of possession & position, Maldon had conceded again, 0-33. A loose kick by Maldon took the ball to half-way, but Campion, simply by moving the ball to the opposite wing, ran through a couple of tackles & scored again, 0-40.

At this point Campion lost another player due to injury & were down to 14 men. Maldon managed to get into the game more now, but could not convert the pressure into points. Campion kept on throwing the ball around & had the biggest share of possession. Maldon did, however, manage to score, winger Sam Moon running in at the corner, 5-40. A first phase move by Campion resulted in another try, 5-47, again, a simple case of moving the ball & supporting the player.

Sam Moon managed to score again, for a final score of 10-47. Campion were deserved winners & Maldon will need to pick themselves up for their final game before Christmas, next week.
