Maldon travelled to not so sunny Thurrock, after a few days of wonderful Spring weather. But, in the cold & damp Maldon faced the team who had only lost one game this season & were looking to make the move to a higher league.
With a much changed line-up Maldon were expecting a tough game against a team that were physically much bigger in both forwards & backs.
Thurrock started strongly, kicking the ball down into the Maldon 22 early on. By using their powerful pack Thurrock soon crossed for the opening try, 7-0.
Maldon knew that they had to respond immediately & counter the physical presence of Thurrock. A great surge by Jim Roblin got Maldon over the gain line & Maldon used the ball well to maintain the pressure on Thurrock. Good handling created space & this allowed Joe Entwistle to run over the last defender to score, 7-5.
After this Thurrock dominated in all aspects of the game, finishing the half at 48-5.
The second half followed much the same pattern, but Maldon did not manage to score again. There was a period of around 10 minutes when Maldon had the ball & kept possession, and gained a bit of momentum, but were unable to turn this pressure into points.
The final score of 91-5 was an indication of the standard that Thurrock played. Maldon can be proud that they never gave up & did their best to defend against a very good team.
Man of the match - Jim Roblin
