Maldon travelled to Pegasus on a bright & breezy afternoon. Pegasus had forfeited 2 games this season already, so Maldon were confident following their performances this season.
Maldon started the game confidently, but soon made too many errors, allowing Pegasus to gain territory. This pattern continued for about 15 minutes, as Maldon made mistakes, but then defended well to prevent Pegasus from actually crossing the line.
Maldon then put together some phases of play, with excellent linking between players. This gain in territory resulted in a scrum close to the try line, from which Brendan Bignall crossed near the posts, converted by Dan Allen, 0-7. This was followed soon after by Mickey Curry scoring in the corner, 0-12. Maldon began to dominate, with big carries from Ben Marshall & Jamie Farrup. Quick ball gave Jack Sylvester the chance to kick for Dan Allen to score again, 0-17.
The open play was definitely going Maldon’s way. Scrums & line-outs were proving a good contest between both packs & Maldon’s forwards faced new pressures coming up against a large Pegasus pack.
Continued possession & phases of play for a dominant Maldon proved too much for Pegasus to defend. Another play in which many players linked together saw Jack Judd run a great support line to score, converted by Dan Allen, 0-24.
Then, against the run of play Pegasus came back into the game, scoring a try similar to Maldon’s first, converted to make the score 7-24.
Dan Allen finished the half off by scoring again, converting his own try to make the score 7-31 at half-time.
The second half promised much, as the hope was that Maldon would overrun the opposition & score more tries. However, this was not the case, as Maldon displayed a very average performance. Pegasus actually raised their game & had some very good spells of rugby. They managed to score a good try, but this was sandwiched between 2 tries for Maldon, first by Max Knight showing good strength to get over the line &, secondly, in the final play of the game, by Dan Allen for his hat-trick giving him a personal total of 21 points.
Although this was a convincing final score, Maldon will hope to perform to a higher standard next week in front of the VPs, at home to Barking.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Louis ‘Caesar’ Pointer, for his performance at scrum half, being aggressive and securing Maldon ball for 80 minutes.
